Safe driving

Increased safety

Knowing in advance the characteristics of the upcoming road segment (e.g., a curve) allows for not only safer but also smoother driving. The driver is aware beforehand of the appropriate speed range for the upcoming curve and can adjust their approach accordingly (avoiding sudden braking, especially in suboptimal conditions such as wet roads). The warning system (both visual and auditory) can automatically alert the driver if the current speed is not compatible with the expected speed, further enhancing driving safety when enabled. Additionally, understanding the curve allows for better modulation of steering inputs.

Reduced fuel consumption

It’s clear that knowledge of the route also impacts fuel consumption. Taking a curve at excessive speed is not only dangerous but also requires heavy braking on entry and increased acceleration on exit. Surprisingly, even entering or traversing a curve too slowly (compared to the appropriate range) is penalizing because it necessitates greater acceleration on exit, resulting in higher fuel consumption. Moreover, the frequency of braking and acceleration is much higher when the type of curve ahead is unknown. This leads to driving behavior that is the exact opposite of what should be done for fuel-efficient driving.

To avoid estimating fuel savings too crudely, we developed a dedicated device that collects key parameters directly from the vehicle’s OBD2 port (instantaneous fuel consumption, accelerator pressure, brake pressure, steering angle, etc.). This device allowed us to verify, on the road, the behavior of users who rigorously follow CoDrive’s instructions compared to those who do not use it. After several months of testing, we quantified an average fuel savings of approximately 10% (up to 15% on highways) and nearly 18% in average battery savings for electric vehicles.

Keep getting better and better!

Once the journey is completed, the algorithm allows for generating a “driving report” with evaluations of the behaviors exhibited, and also enables reviewing the route just traveled. It highlights (using various colors and gradients) for each curve, the level of driving appropriateness.

This allows understanding where and what went wrong, to improve one’s driving style. The scores can be configured to give varying importance to different elements (safety, fuel consumption, combination of both aspects), and can be adapted to the driver’s experience level. Reports can be both individual and aggregated (e.g., for a specific group, an entire fleet, etc.).

CoDrive also offers the possibility of publishing your driving style data, within the desired context (e.g., within a fleet, a group, a specific community, or the entire community of CoDrive users), as an additional incentive for improvement. This allows you to compare your data with others and compete in rankings for the safest driving, the most eco-friendly driving, or other combinations of criteria and styles!
